The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military and political supranational alliance founded in 1949 after World War II, protects all countries included in the agreement.
NATO's key purpose is to defend the member countries involved in the organization, which include the original twelve – Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States – and eighteen more: Greece, Turkey, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.
Although Ukraine has expressed its desire to join NATO since the early 2000s, Russia has strongly opposed the idea of Ukraine joining NATO and has threatened severe consequences if the former territory becomes a NATO member.
Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, has stated that he believes Ukraine is still a part of Russia and considers Ukraine establishing stronger relationships with other countries as a form of betrayal.
In addition, he is concerned with this false idea that Ukraine's close range to Moscow would become a threat if Ukraine were to receive weapons, as that could be used to attack the capital of Russia.
The purpose of NATO, however, is much different
– it contributes unanimous support if an attack on any of the member countries occurs "to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic Area".
NATO has also provided nonmembers support, such as Syria by distributing weapons during the Syrian civil war, and more recently, Ukraine; NATO has supplied Ukraine with weapons and resources to survive and arm themselves against Russian forces who are invading and attempting to seize control of Ukraine.
Ukraine was granted nearly all of its requests for aid except the creation of a no-fly zone, which the alliance fears a war will directly result from doing so.
Although some may believe NATO is not doing enough to back Ukraine, many political, social, and economic factors come into play when making the decision on to what extent helping another country’s war is appropriate.
