새에덴교회(소강석 목사)는, 코로나팬데믹 가운데 한국교회가 나가야 할 선교의 방향을 제시하였다. “한국교회 중대형교회는 코로나팬데믹으로 어려워진 작은교회를 살려야 합니다”.

교회사적으로 볼 때, 한국교회는 자국인에 의해 시작되었다. 의주 청년 4명(백홍준 서상륜 이성하 김진기)이 인삼장사를 하며 만주에서 로스와 매킨타이어 선교사를 만나 세례받고 시작되었다.

이때 로스 선교사가 번역한 성서를 가지고 들어오게 되고, 이후 서상륜에 의해 우리나라 최초의 작은교회인 솔래(송천)교회가 세워졌다.

이후 1884년 미국에서 의료 선교사 알렌이 들어오고, 1885년 아펜젤러 언더우드 선교사가 들어와 의료 선교를 하게 되었다. 그 당시 우리나라는 이미 주권과 문화를 모두 잃고 있었고, 결국 교회는 제국주의 일본에게 침탈당한 백성들에게 친구로 들어와 그들을 돕는 종교가 되었다. 이 때부터 기독교는 사회 속에 깊숙이 들어가게 되었다.

At that time, Korea had already lost both sovereignty and culture, and the church eventually became a religion to help the people who had been invaded by imperial Japan as a friend. 그런데 3.1운동 이후 문화 정부가 들어서, 선교사들에게 종교의 자유는 주되, ‘출애굽기’와 ‘느헤미야’를 본문으로 설교를 못하게 하는 등 민족적 정치적 운동을 막으면서 교회에서 선포되는 메시지는 이 땅에 대한 것이 아니라, 하늘에 대한 것 즉 죽어서 가는 천국만 전하는 종교로 변질되기 시작했다.

따라서 일제의 회유로 성장한 교회가 정치에 대해 발언하는 목사를 ‘정치목사’라 했고, 교계 안에서는 보수와 진보로 나눠지게 되었다. 즉 NCC계열과 한기총 계열이 그 일제 강점기부터 싹터온 것이다. 한국교회는 이런 과정을 거치면서 경제와 함께 성장해 왔다. 그 가운데 한국교회는 코로나 팬데믹을 경험했고, 코로나 이후 한국교회는 모두 정체를 겪게 되었다.

여기에 대해 개혁주의적인 영성을 가진 행동하는 영성가 새에덴교회 소강석 목사는 개인주의가 발달하고 자기를 찾고 정체성을 찾기 때문에 교회의 대사회적 신인도가 추락하게 될수밖에 없었다고 보았다. 그래서 새에덴교회 성도들은 소강석 목사의 리더쉽에 협력해 코로나팬데믹 가운데에서도 메디칼 처치로, 작은 교회 살리는 일로 생명을 건 사투를 해오면서 기독교 원형교회 대헌장을 선포한 것이다.

소강석 목사는 "세상의 빛이 되어야 할 교회가 빛의 사명을 감당하지 못하고, 소금의 사명을 감당해야 할 교회가 소금을 세상에 뿌리지 않고, 교회로서의 역할을 제대로 못하고 있었는데, 바로 여기에 한국교회 침체의 원인이 있다"며, "이런 역사적 인식을 갖고, 개인의 영혼 구원과 사회구원의 양 날개를 펼칠 때, 진정한 한국교회 부흥이 시작될 것"이라고 말했다.

소강석 목사는 “한국교회는 지나온 날들을 바라볼 필요가 있습니다. 오늘의 한국교회가 있기까지의 ‘하나님의 은혜’를 기억 할 때라 생각합니다. ‘이때를 위함인지 누가 아느냐? 한국교회 작은 교회 살릴 때 말입니다. 코로나 팬데믹 상황에서도 큰 교회건 작은 교회건 일단 ‘마이 처치 신드롬’에 빠져 있는데 이 늪에서 한국교회가 빠져나와 이제 특히, 중대형 교회가 일어나 작은 교회를 살려내야 합니다”며, “물론 다들 힘들죠. 그러나 힘들어도 초대교회를 생각하고, 우리나라 처음의 교회들을 생각해야 할 때라 생각합니다. 우선 무너져가고 있는 작은 교회를 살려야 합니다. 우리 모두 힘을 모아 숲을 만들어 가는 것입니다. 작은 교회라는 숲이 울창하게 될 때, 중대형 교회도 살아남을 수 있습니다. 이런 일을 할 때 중요한 것은 서로 격려하고 지지하는 것입니다.”라고 말했다.

When it comes to saving small churches in Korea. However, even when it is difficult, I think it is time to think about the early church and think about the first churches in Korea. First of all, we need to save a small church that is collapsing. We are all working together to create a forest. When the forest called a small church grows thick, Even medium and large churches can survive. The important thing in doing this is to encourage and support each other.”

 

소강석 목사는, “국세청 자료를 바탕으로, 코로나 팬데믹으로 한국교회 중 1만개가 문을 닫았다고 주장하는 사람들이 있고, 반면에 통계청에서는 등록 기독교 단체 수가 1,754군데 늘었다고도 합니다. 단순히 목회자의 세금 신고가 줄었다는 것으로 교회 문을 닫았다고 단정하기는 어렵다는 이야기입니다. 

 

Pastor Kang-seok So said, “Based on data from the National Tax Service, there are people who claim that 10,000 Korean churches have closed due to the corona pandemic, while Statistics Korea also says that the number of registered Christian organizations has increased by 1,754. It is difficult to conclude that the church is closed simply because pastors' tax returns have decreased.

 

만약 통계청의 보고가 맞다면, 작은 교회 목회자들은 정말 칭찬하고 격려받아야 한다. 비록 그들이 월세를 못내서 예배 장소를 가정으로 옮겼다 하더라도 교회 문을 닫지 않고 끝까지 지킬 수 있는 것이 얼마나 감사한가.

 

If the report of the National Statistical Office is correct, the pastors of small churches should really be praised and encouraged. Even if they couldn't pay the rent and moved the place of worship to their home, how grateful they were to be able to keep the church door until the end.

 

“그러나 통계청 보고만 100% 믿을 수는 없습니다. 여기서 우리는 목회자들의 세금 신고가 줄었다는 부분도 주목해야 합니다. 실제는 국세청과 통계청 수치 중간 정도로 보면 되지 않을까 짐작합니다.”

 

소강석 목사는 이쯤에서 “그 어떤 악조건 속에서도 교회를 살리기를 소망하는 마음이 간절하면, 방법이 보일 것입니다. 길을 찾을 것입니다. 어려운 상황을 돌파할 것입니다. 그러나 간절함이 없으면 핑계만 대고 남 탓만 하게 될 것입니다. 아무렇치 않게 1만개의 교회가 사라졌다고 이야기하는 걸 보면 가슴이 아픕니다.”

However, if we are not desperate, we will only use excuses and blame others. It breaks my heart to see them say that 10,000 churches have disappeared.”

새에덴교회는 예장(합동) 총회장 당시, 총회 기금으로 미자립교회에 21억6000만원을 지원했고, 또 5억원을 출자해 코로나로 어쩔 수 없이 귀국했던 선교사들의 생활비를 지원했다. 그리고 지난해 12월에는 목회자 600명 세미나를 열어 어려운 교회에 300만원씩, 100만원씩을 지원했다.

최근에는 1,200명 목사님을 초청하여 ‘ReStart 목회 콘퍼런스’를 열고 500명 넘는 미자립교회 목회자에게 100만원씩을 지원했다. 이 세미나에 온 목사님들이 감동해 각 지역별로 ReStart 후속 콘퍼런스를 하는 운동이 일어나고 있다.

 

Recently, 1,200 pastors were invited to the ‘ReStart Pastoral Conference’, and over 500 pastors of non-self-supporting churches were donated 1 million won each. The pastors who came to this seminar were moved by the movement to hold the ReStart follow-up conference in each region.

 

‘나비효과’를 내며, 실제로 지역의 작은 교회들이 살아나더란 것이다.

소강석 목사는 “사실 대형교회 출현에는 주위 작은 교회의 희생이 있었습니다. 과거 한국교회 성장기에 작은 교회는 큰 교회로 수평 이동한 성도가 있더라도 그 빈자리를 바로바로 채울 수 있었습니다. 생태계적 선순환이 이루어진 것이죠. 그러나 지금은 그렇지가 않습니다. 작은 교회가 빈자리를 채우기도 어렵고 큰 교회가 예배당을 넓혀도 성도가 늘지 않는 경우가 많습니다. 작금의 작은 교회들이 어려운 이유입니다.”

 

Pastor Kang-seok So said, “Actually, there was a sacrifice of small churches around the emergence of large churches. In the past, during the growth period of the Korean church, small churches could fill the void even if there were members who moved horizontally to larger churches. It is an ecological virtuous cycle. But not now. It is difficult for small churches to fill vacancies, and even if large churches expand their chapels, the number of members often does not increase. This is why small churches today are difficult.”

 

한국뉴스신문 발행인(이성용 대표회장)은 “새에덴교회가 섬김의 사역하는 일에 대해 박수쳐 주지는 못할 망정, 가짜뉴스를 퍼뜨려선 안 될 것입니다. 새에덴교회가 지난번 ReStart 목회 콘퍼런스를 열고 미자립교회 목사님들을 지원할 때 일 말입니다.” 며 다시금 말문을 열었다.

카카오톡 단톡방에서 특정 집회에 참석하라는 인포데믹(가짜뉴스)을 퍼뜨리는 사람들이 있었는데, 우리는 이러한 가운데 새에덴교회의 지역사회 나눔과 한국교회 섬김에 대하여 일어나 박수쳐 주어야지, 만약 또 이런 가짜뉴스를 난발하고 다시 이런 가짜뉴스를 퍼뜨리는 언론이 있다면 사회와 한국교회에서 지탄받게 될 것이다.

If there will be more a media that makes a fuss around and spreads fake news like this again, society and the Korean church will be condemned.

 

우리 주변에 있는 중대형 교회가 새에덴교회의 섬김과 나눔의 일을 함께해 나간다면, 한국교회 작은교회는 다시금 일어나 더 큰 아름다운 숲을 말들게 될 것이다.

어느덧 11월이 지나가고, 12월 주님 오시는 성탄절을 기도로 준비하는 대강절이 시작된다.

이때 소강석 목사는 "한국교회의 중대형 교회 중 작은 교회를 섬겨온 여의도순복음교회와 사랑의교회, 광림교회 등에서 미자립교회 목회자들을 섬긴 것은 참으로 고무적"이라고 하면서, “이제 우리 중대형 교회가 앞장서서 무너져가고 있는 작은 교회를 함께 도와 일으켜 살려내자” 눈물로 호소했다.
