오스트리아의 비엔나는 음악을 사랑하는 사람들이라면 그들의 지쳤던 가슴을 잔잔히 다독이며, 때로는 돌과 같이 굳었던 마음에 행복한 설렘을 안기는 곳이기에 다시금 그들의 발길을 이끄는 곳이라 할 수 있다. 매우 화려하지도… 매우 바쁘지도 않은 듯 자연스럽게 흘러가는 시간 속에서 남겨진 역사의 흔적들은 결코 가볍지 않게 이 곳 사람들의 현재와 미래를 만들어 내고 있었다.
그리고 지금 2016년이 시작되고 얼마 되지 않아 많은 사람들이 새해에 다짐했던 부분들이 쉽게 수행되지 못했던 것들을 다시금 돌아보고, 마음을 다잡을 수 있는 진한 파장이 필요한 이 순간, 플루티스트 전현서가 하피스트 Jana Bouskova, 그리고 Bohuslav Martinu Symphony Orchestra와 함께 세계적인 무대인 무직페어라인 황금홀을 가득 메운 관객 앞에 1월26일 그는 서있었다.
모차르트의 사랑을 많이 받지 못했던 플룻. 음악가였지만 먹고 살기 위한 필연적인 운명 때문에 만들어낸 곡으로 알려진 “플루트와 하프를 위한 협주곡 C장조 K.299”는 1787년 3월 파리에서 만난 기네라는 공작과 딸을 위해 만들어낸 곡이다. 플룻을 잘 연주하던 기네 공작과 하프를 연주하는 그의 딸의 결혼식을 기념하는 아름다운 곡이지만, 사실 이 곡을 쓰면서 모차르트는 행복하지 않았을지 모른다.
하지만 오늘 무직페어라인에서의 연주를 듣는다면 그가 그 당시 귀족과의 사이에서 어쩔 수 없이 만들어낸 곡이었지만 후대의 사랑을 받고, 아름다운 플룻과 하프 선율에 자신도 모르게 또 다른 플룻 협주곡을 만들고 있을 것 같았다. 1악장 오케스트라의 연주가 시작을 알린 뒤, 플루티스트 전현서의 입술이 플룻과 만나면서 내는 소리는 마치 물 속에 던져지는 작고도 고운 구슬처럼 생기가 넘쳐 흘렀다. 웅장함을 뛰어넘어, 작지만 우아하게 하프가 만들어내는 물결 속에서 던져지는 플룻의 음 하나하나는 물결에 생동감을 불어넣었고, 빛을 더해내기 시작했다.
플룻과 하프의 조화롭고도 우아한 기교와 현란함은 3악장 전체를 풍성하게 만들어내었다. 그리고 협주곡이 연주되는 동안 마치 무직페어라인은 천국과도 같았고, 무대는 천국의 중앙에 있는 호수와도 같았다. 소리가 만들어내는 놀라운 화폭 속에서 관객들은 가장 오스트리아스럽고, 가장 비엔나를 닮은 듯한 이 선율을 통해 그들의 가슴 속에 일렁거리는 파장을 느끼는 것 같았다. 그리고 끝없이 이어지는 박수갈채 속에서 플루티스트 전현서 역시 그녀의 삶에 일렁이는 아름다운 파장의 여운에 감사하며 화답했다.
아직 어린 나이에도 함께 연주하는 세계적인 하피스트 Jana Bouskova와의 환상적인 호흡을 통해 서로의 음색을 더욱 빛내게 만들던 이번 연주는 앞으로 플루티스트 전현서가 더 많은 작곡가들과 연주자들의 사랑을 받을 수 밖에 없음을 입증하는 자리라는 생각이 들었다.
단지 귀로만 흘러가는 음악이 아닌, 사람들의 삶을 조금 더 아름답게 만들 수 있도록 그들의 가슴 속에 잔잔하고도 강렬한 파장을 만들어낼 수 있는 음악인이 가진 특별하고도 귀한 사명을 다시금 보여주었다. 세계적인 작곡가 모차르트가 자신의 조국 오스트리아에서 울려 퍼진 이번 연주를 들으며, 자신의 탄생 260주년이 되는 2016년을 그가 있는 천국의 호수 앞에서 잔을 들며 축배를 들고 있지 않을까……자극적인 세상의 흐름 속에서 오히려 자극적이지 않아도 충분히 세상에 아름다운 파장을 만들어내며, 음악인과 음악애호가들의 가슴에 남을 플루티스트 전현서의 활동을 기대해 본다.

In commemoration of Mozart for his 260th anniversary: flutist HyunSeo Cheon
March seems far away, yet the harp and flute bring Spring into the Musikverein Golden Hall
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Nearly anyone recognises the name “Mozart”, even those who do not enjoy classical music. The Austrian composer is widely known for being one of the greatest composers in history. While he is not particularly known for being innovative, Mozart has shown irresistible charm and his ability to spread plentiful amounts of expression through his music. And what better way is there to celebrate Mozart’s birth than to perform his own concerto in the heart of Vienna. On the 25th of January, flutist HyunSeo Cheon and harpist Jana Boušková played the Double Concerto for Flute and Harp in C Major, K. 299 with Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra in one of the finest hall, Musikverein Golden Hall. Underneath the ceiling painting of Apollo and his nine Muses, Cheon and Boušková seemed like two wonderful nymphs enjoying humming their magical instruments to Mozart.
It is unusual for Mozart to write a concerto for both the flute and harp, as he disliked both solo instruments. However, during his stay in Paris, Adrien-Louis de Bonnières, duc de Guînes, a flutist, and his harpist daughter Marie-Louise-Philippine seemed to have inspired the composer. It is seen in his letter to his father that the Duke played the flute “extremely well” and his daughter’s skills in playing the harp was “magnifique”. With their musical abilities in mind, Mozart carefully constructed the structure of the concerto, as the combination of flute and harp is difficult to balance. The flute and harp are known to play light and magical tune and combining these two instruments may express themselves as lazy and drunk. Yet, Mozart has succeeded in balancing their sounds with the orchestra and the concerto became a perennial crowd-pleaser.
While the concerto may be well written by the greatest composer, one must keep in mind that Mozart composed this piece with the Duke and his daughter in mind, who Mozart thought to have great talent in their musical instrument. As the harp was still being developed and was seen as more of a plucking piano, Mozart seemed to have transformed the piano piece to the harp. Even with complicated movements and patterns of notes that are not typically used for the harp, Boušková’s harp danced through it with ease. The sounds created by the harpist was the warmest tone one could ever have heard as if Boušková clothed the audience with silk curtains. On her right stood the flutist, HyunSeo Cheon. Her virtuosity and technique shine, giving the Golden Hall a much brighter glow making the hall seems much more grand. The flute and harp converse throughout the concerto as they alternate their melody and accompany each other’s lines. The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra stands strongly behind the two ladies, stating themes as they piece moves along.
While listening to the song of flute and harp, it was hard not to imagine Apollo arriving at the beautiful scenery while the nine Muses prance their way, singing along with the two artists. Above the audience shimmers the crystals of the chandelier, twisting and turning by the vibrations of sounds. As January is coming to an end, these two nymphs have shown their listeners what SCHWINGUNEN (meaning vibration in German) can do to one’s heart.
