Many parents are concerned that implementing face coverings during the Covid-19 pandemic prevents children from learning social and speech skills.
This concern is not necessary, as increasingly more studies prove masks do not significantly impact speech development in children.
Wearing a mask during a pandemic, especially for children who may be immunocompromised, is completely necessary.
Before Covid, children from cultures that require head and face coverings could still learn to speak and develop without drawbacks.
In addition, students with disabilities – particularly blind students – can learn without obstacles, therefore demonstrating that masks do not prove to be a substantial issue for children, especially when weighing the benefits masks provide versus the possibility that masks could impact the learning of social and speech skills.
Although reading mouths may be more difficult, lips are not the only factor in communication – other parts of the body as a part of non-verbal communication are also crucial.
Masks can help children focus on a person's eyes, voice tones, and body language rather than the mouth movement alone.
Face coverings can also aid in self-control, like controlling when to wear and take one off or stopping habits like nail-biting.
Unfortunately, students with autism may struggle with reading facial expressions, focusing in class, and adapting to the sudden classroom shift.
However, transparent masks and plastic shields can aid in overcoming this barrier while protecting children from the coronavirus.
Face coverings are imperative and should be worn by everyone, especially because the virus is highly contagious and deadly for adolescents who have weaker immune systems compared to adults; nations can conquer the pandemic if more people continue to wear masks, considering the benefits of mask use outweigh the negatives.
