(Variations on a Rococo Theme).”
Cellist Jiyeon Woo defines the word ‘elegance’.
The Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme is one of his most brilliant virtuoso display pieces in the symphonic literature. The work begins with a simple theme and plumbs the depths and streaks to the heights of the capabilities of what is arguably the most beautiful and wide ranging of the stringed instruments of the orchestra. The genius in the work is the manner in which the composer transforms the original theme into numerous and difference personalities, each logical and effective. Cellist Jiyeon Woo completely absored his piece into her own artform. The way she wears her expression mimics the personality of variety of themes. Overall, her performance was just simply outstanding.
Nationally known for her outstanding talent proven by the number of prizes;including first prize in Ye-won, Ewha, Kyunghyang, Korean Times, and Seoul Chamber music competitions; and marvelous performances with Korean Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Savaria Symphony Orchestra and more, cellist Jiyeon Woo steps onto the stage with proud expression on her face. The audience wait with enthusiasm, as many already knew that the concert was going to be a success.
The Variations on a Rococo Theme began a little tentatively in the orchestra in the Introduction, but quickly regained control thanks to an impressive horn section that never split a note throughout. After introducing the theme, a wonderfully conversational dialogue ensued with the soloist and orchestra, most evident in the second variation. Throughout, Jiyeon Woo glided with seemingly effortless grace throughout the many challenging virtuosic flourishes, never once appearing in danger of loosing control despite the beads of sweat that dripped off his face onto his cello. An almost impeccable balance was maintained from the orchestra in every variation. Inherent in Jiyeon Woo’s sound was that rarefied, enveloping tone bequeathed from the great Russian tradition: Jiyeon Woo was fortunate enough to be mentored by Mstislav Rostropovich, in the last years of Rostropovich’s life. Rostropovich was one the great interpreters of the Rococo variations – perhaps the greatest – and this influence assumed a new sense of vitality in Jiyeon Woo’s performance.
